Summer Dreams

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.” ―William Shakespeare

What will this summer hold? Here is my bucket list of sorts for a lovely summer.

We stop our routines of school and opt for a summer, a full long three months of different structures and activities. I tried the schedule of six weeks schooling with one week vacation and found that the one week was enough to throw off our groove more than rejuvenate us. Consequently, we have less breaks through the year and a real thick summer vacation.

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

While my sister creates a fabulous list of memories for her refrigerator and then checks them off, I have a little general list. She creates spreadsheets of things for her children to do, I have less structure. We each need and like different things.

The Simple Hum of Summer

7-9 Morning Routine Wake children up the same time each day, morning duties, devotional, movement, morning chores. Play the piano in the morning. I want to get some fun sheet music that will make piano new and motivating.

9-2 Outdoor Time Let's be outside as much as possible. Plant a garden and tend it. Campouts. Picnics. Hikes. Sandbox. Parks. Basketball. Tree Climbing. Running in the sprinklers. Kayaking at the lake. Beach Fridays. Nature Journaling. Backyard memories.

*Friends and Family I hope that we get to gather. Summer Reading Program at library. Arts and Crafts. Guest magicians and performances. Sports Camps. Dance workshops. Theatre. Swimming lessons. Play dates. Family reunion in June. Celebrating blessing and baptism in July. Cousin time in August. Game Nights. Friends for Dinner. BBQ at the Lake.

2-4 Quiet Time Legos and handwork in the heat of the day when we need to hunker down inside. Listen to audio books. Time for sketching and independent reading. Inside projects. Games. Puzzles. Toys. Hopefully reinforcing the play and put away habits.

4-6 Flexible Time Work on goals. Free play outside. Errands. Calls. Projects and Housework.

6-8 Family Time Eat, Play. Evening Routines. Baths. Reading. Singing.

My Possible Summer Book List

Swallows and the Amazons

The Penderwicks

Return to the Willows

Winnie-the-Pooh

Mary Poppins

Peter Pan

“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.”- L.M. Montgomery

Goals we each create inspired summer goals in the categories of either or all spiritual, intellectual, physical and social.

Family Goals

Physical: Nourishing food: sandwiches on homemade bread, colorful fruit and veggie snacks, fresh salads, and homemade popsicles. Lots of water and smoothies.

Spiritual: Sabbath Delights. Family History, Pilgrim's Progress. Learn to play hymns. Slow candlelit dinners. Lovely walks. Rest

Social: Random Acts of Kindness. Hustle Kindness. "Delightful Doing"

Intellectual: Foreign Language.
